The Shell Grotto back to its former glory at Woburn Abbey
On
instruction from our clients Bedford Estates a sympathetic and careful
restoration of this early 19th century shell grotto has
been carried out. It is situated in the grounds of Woburn Abbey.
The grotto was built as a folly for the 6th Duke of
Bedford, it was fashionable at that time to have romantic ruins in the
grounds of ones estate.
For
a long period of time it was not available for visitors to view, now
it has been restored to is former glory; visitors can view the amazing
interior of shells with most of the splendid geological specimens from
Devon.
Working closely with the local council listed building officer and
English Heritage we replaced the leaking roof including all joinery
and cast lead, if you look closely at the photo you can see a lead
shut coming out of the stonework to discharge the rain water.
All
of the turrets had to be rebuilt, we sourced the stone from all
regions of the UK to match the original, even including lumps of lava
that can be seen in the lower levels of stone work. An SS band
replaced a very old strap that had been fitted to the building but was
badly corroded.
